[Using Sakai] SAKAI as central repository for marks?

Hi Fatima,

We work for a Higher Education institution in the Netherlands that is using
Sakai and a Student Information System. We did some customizations so that
all exams can be graded within Sakai and automatically transferred to the
SIS after review. Here is a description of how it works, hopefully it will
give you inspiration:

   - We used the Sakai Course Management Service to synchronize both the
curriculum and student enrollments between Sakai and SIS. For each course,
a Sakai course site is created and populated with one or more class
   sections.
   - On each course site, a custom Sakai gradebook is used to enter marks
and/or course grades (exams). After grading, marks are transferred to the
   grade administration department
   - A workflow tool for the grade administration department was developed
   to
      - manage exam elegibles and exam registrations. A very important
step, because students might for example need to do a resit for
an exam and
the there is a fixed amount of possible resits.
      - review and transfer grades to the SIS
      - an exam registration tool for students
   - For students, a My Workspace tool was developed that provided a view
on their final grades and study progress records in the SIS.

All in all it required quite some customisations. But the result was that
all marks and grades were entered in Sakai and it significantly reduced
administrative load within the organisation, which paid back the
investments very quickly ;)

Best regards,

Jaeques Koeman
