[Using Sakai] [Building Sakai] Differentiating Message of the Day (MOTD)

A bit late to this thread, but...

I've had a quick play and it might be possible to achieve a more integrated solution (compared to using html files) by adding extra announcement tools into the admin workspace.
You can give them separate channels (e.g. "/announcement/channel/!site/student", "/announcement/channel/!site/faculty"), create a realm entry for the channel, then add the (synoptic) announcement tool into the templates with an appropriate value for the channel.
Permissions might need adjusting for the new realm entries.

Like I said, I've had a very quick and dirty try, consisting of:

- Created a new realm of "/announcement/channel/!site/student"

- Added the ".auth" role to the new realm and set "annc.read"

- Added a new announcement tool to the admin workspace, and set the channel to "/announcement/channel/!site/student"

- Amend a user's "My workspace" site, adding in an announcements tool with the channel set to "/announcement/channel/!site/student"

I didn't test to destruction; but it seems to work, although for some reason the channel-specific announcement tool displays announcements from all the user's sites and is not restricted to just the channel in question. Still, it may prove useful.

Cheers

Raad

Sam Ottenhoff sent this back in June in response to a similar question:

I recommend creating static HTML files for the multiple roles. Create
them in a public folder (Administration Workspace -> Resources -> public).

Then customize the My Workspace template for the multiple roles
(!user.template.student, !user.template.staff, !user.template.faculty).

If you want the tips on the home page of the My Workspace, edit the Home
Page (Administration Workspace -> Sites -> !user.template.student ->
Pages -> Home -> Tools) and add a new Web Content tool to the Home page.

Note that existing My Workspaces need to be deleted before receiving the
new template.

Good morning,

Has anyone configured the MOTD (in their instance of Sakai) to be
specific to the user's role? For example, we would like to display
faculty tips to instructors and student tips to students when they login
to the system. If anyone could offer any assistance for how to
configure this or how they've customized the MOTD on their instance of
Sakai, that would be most helpful.

Thanks,

I am positive that somebody posted a note about how to do this to the DEV list about 6-8 months ago. I thought I'd kept the message but can't find it now.

HI there

Would like to know if there is a way for the Message Of The Day tool to differentiate between messages meant for faculty and that for students? I'd like to send out new tool releases and training updates to show on the My workplace page and meant just for instructors. Has someone wrote a script which we could use which addresses this issue please?
Thanks in advance.
