Or, you could write a JavaScript / JQuery front end to the Sakai forums tool using the Entity Broker API. That would be a neat thing to do!

Sakai has at least (it can be hard to keep track) three forum tools.  
The default forum tool that comes with Sakai is rather old and not really up to the standards of modern forum applications.  JForum was ported by Foothillls College a few years back.  It has more features but isn't all that integrated (has it's own user profiles, for example).  
There is a third, I believe, but I don't recall what it is.

You have even more options these days.  It would not be difficult to wrap any forum tool (like PHPForum) using IMS LTI.  A bit of code, a hosting environment, and viola! a new forum tool.
