[samigo-team] Settings: Score of Zero for Non-Submission

Quick question - wouldn't deleting the content of the field and saving result in a null value for that field? And, would'nt the null be pushed to the GB?

Another feature to think about in this context would be the possibility of reverting a score to a null, or and empty cell. In most tools in Sakai, reverting to a null is impossible, let the grading logic demands it. Nulls are not calculated in the final grade, which is something some instructors prefer.

Hi Roger,

Thanks for your insights. I will add the ability to set the score for non-submissions to the proposed re-work of the Settings page, so that instructors can specify the value as they're setting up the assessment. I think we should still keep this capability on the Total Scores page in the event someone wants to change the value as they are adjusting scores and not force them to go to Settings page to do so.

Best,
Jackie

Okay, so we're solving this the way we do with the Assignments tool. At least it's being addressed.

I'm still wondering if this couldn't be part of the setup of an assessments. The time when (I would say) most faculty decide the penalty for non-submission is *during the setup*. Why force people to wait till after the submissions come in?

I can see why it's been designed this way - to match existing functionality. However, the functionality in Assignments is based on the correct presumption that instructors will grade assignments after they're submitted - there's no auto-grading of assignment questions. It makes sense that the penalty takes place *during* the (necessarily) manual grading activity.

But for Samigo, the normal expectation is that we're setting this assessment up to grade automatically. For the most part, there's no expectation of a grading process to *follow* the submission of the assessment. The more correct presumption would be that instructors would set the penalty for non-submission during setup of the assessment, not after the hard due date (whether Due- or Retract date).

This option is available in Samigo 2.9. Here's a screenshot from qa3:

Hi all,

Based on a question from a faculty user here at IU Bloomington, I'm wondering if there's ever been a discussion around the option (via settings) for giving a score of zero to students who have no submission by the due date (or the retract date, depending).

Our user points out that, in a case where the scores are pushed to the Gradebook, if an instructor wishes to enter scores of zero for non-submission (s)he must go into Samigo and manually enter zero (via Adjustment) for each student. That's a whole lot more clicking than folks want to do.

I'm not suggesting that we change the current default of leaving the score as null for non-submission.

But what about creating an option that appears -when an assessment is linked to the Gradebook - to set the score to zero for non-submission?

If this has already been discussed elsewhere, I'd be happy to know the outcome(s) of that discussion.

Best,
