[sakai2-tcc] [Building Sakai] Google Summer of Code 2012

I think webdav is a lost cause, mostly because the problems are often with
the clients and trying to keep up and support each client's special tweaks
and additions to the webdav protocol (even if we used a library like
Milton) is a never ending battle. Even with certain versions of Windows,
Milton either doesn't work or has very special requirements for some
clients (like having to run parts on the root, having to run on a separate
domain, having to run some requests unsecured [1]). Even if we pass the
litmus it still doesn't mean it would work, which seems like it's pretty
discouraging. What would be the goals of this effort?

I personally think it would be better to look at implementing sftp with a
library like mina [2] if someone had GSoC style time to do it. At least
sftp is a reliable protocol that I've never had any problems with. Sure you
can't mount it to a drive letter as easily, but swish on Windows [3] and
fuse on osx/linux work really well. And I've never had the problems with
sftp that I've had with dav.

I believe having a 100% working solution that you need a client for is
better than a <50% working solution that is built into the OS, though
typically right now we can generally just say "use cyberduck" and it works.
