I think that what JVM folks run is separate from what we put in the release notes.

If we are saying 1.6 in release notes, that suggests to me that we should have gone through a QA phase with the release running under 1.6.

We should not just change the number because time has passed unless we do testing that supports the number change.

Again, folks can and do run in 1.6 locally - no big deal and good valuable info - but changing the recommendation in the release notes should be backed by formal testing IMHO.
