[Using Sakai] Sakai 10 new feature : Site info > Page Order: disable a tool

Thank you all for the comments and replies.

It may be helpful to say ( as I mentioned in my initial email ) that at Oxford we use Sakai “project” site as oppose to “course” site. There are two default roles in a “project” site: Maintain and Access. I tested hide/disable features using the “Access” role (equivalent to the “student” role in a “course” site). When I tested the “Assignments” and “Forums” tools, I used the “Web content” link to link the hidden/disabled tool to the left hand side of the page rather than “Lessons” tool. When I logged into a site as an ‘Access’ user, I could see both tools regardless of being hidden or disabled.

I suspect it is a bug in “project” site…

Does anyone there in the community use ‘project’ site in Sakai 10? It’d be great if you could share your experience?

Many thanks again

Quite some time ago I did a lot of testing with Page Order locked/disabled, but it was done in 2.9.

My results are in https://jira.sakaiproject.org/browse/SAK-23194

It shows what I tested and may help with the testing of Sakai 10.

I concur with Louis about the functionality of these Page Order icons - I hope no one is thinking of changing how these work or eliminating any of them.

In your testing below I think you discovered an issue with the “View Site As” option, in that it allows you to see what the other role sees but it does not really change your permissions. Try the same test truly logged in with a student account.

So what exactly is the difference between the padlock and light bulb then?

Dear Mathew and Bryan,

Thanks for your Reponses. Now I have tested both Assignments and Forums tools as Bryan suggested.

· Link the frame URLs of Assignment and Forums on hompage

· Padlock tool hid the tool from the left hand side, but it did not prevent an “Access” user from viewing the tools (e.g. replying to the messages in a discussion forum) via the link on the homepage.

Thanks

Fawei

Agree about resources,

You can still see the resources and files from where? From a link on the portal or somewhere else? The lightbulb (hide) button buttons only prevents access to the tool from the portal level. It doesn't actually block anything on the tool level or put up any new security restrictions on files. The disable button locks down the tool further (removes site.upd) which removes it from more places, but still doesn't prevent access to files if you know the URL and the user has access.

In Sakai 10, you can actually make folder Hidden, which allow access to the contents but prevent seeing the actual folders. You can make folders/files completely private/inaccessible or restrict access only to certain groups through permissions at the directory level.

Resources may be a bad example to test with. I know that it has it's own settings when it comes to public and private data. Do you see this same behavior with other tools like forums, assignments, etc?

Many thanks Bryan for your swift response. To provide a bit background information, it is worth saying that we use “Project’ site at Oxford with “Access” and “Maintain” roles.

For the lightbulb, I thought it always works as ‘hidden’ feature ( was not aware that it also disables the tool). For example, we often hide the ‘Resources’ tool from the left hand side and link the relevant files/folders using the “Web content” tool which presents a neater view of the files. If the purpose of padlock is to hide and disable a tool, is this equivalent to removing the tool via Site Info> Edit tools?

I am also a bit confused by the term ‘disable’ here after my experiment (see below). Although I disabled the Resources tool, the student can still see the files.

This is how I tried:

Step 1.

· Go to the top-level folder in Resources where contains a number of files and folders

· Click “Actions” next to the folder and select “Make Web Content Link” to link Resources files/folder from the left hand side of the page

Step 2:

Tested the padlock:

· Go to Site Info > Page order > Padlock tool to disable Resources

· Log into the site as a ‘Access’ role and click on the Web Content link, I still can see the Resources files/folders

·
Step 3:

Tested the removing tool from the site:

· Undo what I did in Step 2 to put the tool back to its original status

· Go to Site Info > Edit tools> untick “Resources” from the left hand side

· Log into the site as a ‘Access’ role and click on the Web Content link, again I can see the Resources files/folders

To sum up, it seems that the padlock feature is the same as ‘removing tool” via Site Info> Edit Tool. Both methods do not really ‘disable’ the tool.

Any comments are very welcome.

Best wishes

Fawei

They have two distinct functionalities. The lightbulb is used to hide the tool, but allows users to still access it. This was introduced for Lessons where, for example, an instructor would want to use the forums tool inside the lessons tool but not have the forums tool show up on the left hand menu. The padlock replaced the old lightbulb's functionality where it hides and disables the tool for users.

Dear all,

I notice that Sakai 10 has a new feature in the Page Order tool: disable a tool (the padlock icon - see attached screenshot). Anyone knows the purpose of having this new feature? Doesn’t the hide a tool feature (light bulb) have more or less the same functionality? Would anyone like to share their experience of using this new feature?

Many thanks

Fawei
