Many thanks Bryan for your swift response. To provide a bit background information, it is worth saying that we use “Project’ site at Oxford with “Access” and “Maintain” roles.

For the lightbulb, I thought it always works as ‘hidden’ feature ( was not aware that it also disables the tool). For example, we often hide the ‘Resources’ tool from the left hand side and link the relevant files/folders using the “Web content” tool which presents a neater view of the files. If the purpose of padlock is to hide and disable a tool, is this equivalent to removing the tool via Site Info> Edit tools?

I am also a bit confused by the term ‘disable’ here after my experiment (see below). Although I disabled the Resources tool, the student can still see the files.

This is how I tried:

Step 1.

· Go to the top-level folder in Resources where contains a number of files and folders

· Click “Actions” next to the folder and select “Make Web Content Link” to link Resources files/folder from the left hand side of the page

Step 2:

Tested the padlock:

· Go to Site Info > Page order > Padlock tool to disable Resources

· Log into the site as a ‘Access’ role and click on the Web Content link, I still can see the Resources files/folders

·
Step 3:

Tested the removing tool from the site:

· Undo what I did in Step 2 to put the tool back to its original status

· Go to Site Info > Edit tools> untick “Resources” from the left hand side

· Log into the site as a ‘Access’ role and click on the Web Content link, again I can see the Resources files/folders

To sum up, it seems that the padlock feature is the same as ‘removing tool” via Site Info> Edit Tool. Both methods do not really ‘disable’ the tool.

Any comments are very welcome.

Best wishes

Fawei

They have two distinct functionalities. The lightbulb is used to hide the tool, but allows users to still access it. This was introduced for Lessons where, for example, an instructor would want to use the forums tool inside the lessons tool but not have the forums tool show up on the left hand menu. The padlock replaced the old lightbulb's functionality where it hides and disables the tool for users.

Dear all,

I notice that Sakai 10 has a new feature in the Page Order tool: disable a tool (the padlock icon - see attached screenshot). Anyone knows the purpose of having this new feature? Doesn’t the hide a tool feature (light bulb) have more or less the same functionality? Would anyone like to share their experience of using this new feature?

Many thanks

Fawei
