[Using Sakai] Allowing Instructors to edit/change course site title

Laura and Francesca,
We just developed a fix in Preferences that will allow students to either use their course code or course description for the same reason--by default, the first is selected. It was released last Thursday, primarily to satisfy our Law school.

Show tabs as:
 Course code (e.g. F13-ACCT-134C-01)
Course name/description (e.g. First Year Accounting)

The intent is to contribute it back (ccing our developer). Not sure if this article about the feature is behind a firewall, but here's a URL (it includes other notes).

A few notes, just fyi, if you see the 4 other tips in that article
- We are using old style Customize tabs because we had issues with the new drag and drop (mainly because people missed the term categorization, but also because when one list or the other was longer than the other, it was hard to drag it back and forth).
-We changed My Active Sites overflow tab to "More Sites" and "Membership" to "My Sites"
-Am working with developer this week to change pulldown menu to say "Sites displayed as tabs" instead of "Tabs displayed" because I find the math confusing--pulldown says 4, number of sites is 3, but it looks like there are 5 tabs displayed (both My Workspace and My Active sites appear as and are described as tabs--but one is not?). I would like to contribute this back but haven't filed a JIRA.
-We automatically hide old course sites for users every quarter, though not project sites.

Subject: [Using Sakai] Allowing Instructors to edit/change course site title

Francesca,

Hello! We met at the conference in June in an ad hoc session about changes to Sakai leadership structure needed as we move forward in the Apereo Foundation….

To your question, yes we allow Instructors to change the course site title. Students love it. Instructors love it. Support people not so much. But we’ve learned to adapt. Our biggest friend is the “Super User” feature. Because of it, we can login as the Instructor and look around to see which site they’re talking about when they have a problem. If we need to know how that site was originally constructed (via SIS integration or manually) we need to use the Sites tool to find the externalSiteID, and that is kind of a pain, but fortunately it doesn’t happen too often.

Grad Students were advocating for changing the title as our naming convention for course sites is like this: FA13-MGMT-750456-01. They told us all those codes all look alike, sometimes only varying by a couple of digits. Instructors can therefore change them to Macroeconomics Fall 2013 or whatever they wish…

Hope this is helpful,

Laura
