[Using Sakai] Request to institutions running Sakai 2.9

Hello,
First, a big thanks to Gonzalo and others who worked on the 2.9 skin--the process was well documented and the skin was relatively easy to adapt. It was a learning experience to see what css modern browsers now support. Stanford will be releasing CLE 2.9 on our campus on Sunday June 16 right before Summer quarter; our current version is 2.6, from 3 years ago. Our skin will get a larger update later in the summer but you can see what is slated for release this June here.

I've also posted what our 2.6 looks like--note that header is currently twice as tall.

A few additional notes than what I've noted on confluence:
    * Some edits we made are not supported by ie7, which 2.9 doesn't support anyway. But our public clusters were treating coursework.stanford.edu like an intranet site in ie8; ie8 renders intranet sites as if in ie7. We are working with the techs who manage those computers to make sure our site display in ie8.
    * The browsers for 2.9 all support png images, which look a lot better than gif or jpg for logos.
    * We are not implementing presence or chat at this time, or Lessons. If there are skin issues there, we have yet to encounter them.
    * Graduate school branding used to be another skin, now they are just images above tool nav
    * Our pda.css just needed color change. The only graphic we had to add was the little back arrow-like button and Gonzalo has pretty good notes on how to make that.

These additional future changes are ones that I think might be useful universally; we'll probably do them locally later this summer, but if someone else wants to take them on, I think they would be useful.
    * Change skin for CKEditor to Moono; it's the new CKEditor default but came out after 2.9 was released
    * The navIntraTool ActionToolbar looks more like buttons now. Some tools, including SAMigo and preferences, use this more like persistent tabs, not links, but there is no state change when that tab is currently selected. This has to be updated in code for each tool, not css
    * The buttons for Submit/Cancel used to be blue and grey, with the blue one being the anticipated choice. However, now they are both blue (though if a button is inactive, it is grey). We'd like to change that so that the button is blue, and the unlikely choice is a grey link.

We will probably do the following additional changes this summer
    * Place Logout, Profile, and Tutorial under the user's name in a dropdown popup, as Google does. But we've been advised that this will need accessibility testing.
    * Replace "My Workspace" with a logo for CourseWork, but need to examine any repercussions (such as what to call that tab)
    * Change font so we are not dependent on what people have on their OS. Possibly Helvetica Neue or open source Stanford fonts. Advice on how or whether to do this is appreciated.
    * Hide synoptic tools in pda view, as well as address bar (could use someone's help on last one)
    * We may not use Sakai to manage our gateway page. Contemplating using Twitter Bootstrap so we can update look and feel of our "marketing."

Subject: [Using Sakai] Request to institutions running Sakai 2.9

Hello,

We recently upgraded to Sakai 2.9 and are planning to modify the skin in the summer.

We're trying to get a feel for possibilities & limitations and we're reviewing the documentation - but it would be very helpful to hear from others who have already been through this process. If anyone is running 2.9 & has already modified the default skin, would you be willing to share lessons learned and either screen shots or (ideally) guest access to your system?
Thanks!
