While it might not be in your future immediately, Lessons in Sakai 2.9 is designed to solve these use cases.  You could play on the nightly experimental 2.9 server.

Make a site, add Lessons to the site and see what you think.

Another good reason to upgrade to 2.8 is that you will be that much closer to 2.9 :)
