[Using Sakai] Advice for Create Own Course Sites

Hi
I can't tell you technically how this was done, I'm not sure how much of this is default and how much is customization, but I'll describe how this appears to instructors at Stanford.

A user clicks New in Worksite setup and chooses an academic term. If there are no courses that the logged in user is listed as the instructor for that term, it will say so, or it will display all courses. Instructors can pick courses to add to a course site and the rosters will get associated immediately.

There is a field so a TA or admin can enter a username of an instructor and get their list of courses to pick a course from--the course is created, but student roster is not associated so students can't see it in case the requestor is bogus-- the instructor is emailed and must verify that this person is their actual TA, then we will add the roster.

There were probably many lessons in the early days but I wasn't here. I will say that some instructors tend to add the kitchen sink when it comes to tools, even if they don't use it. The business and law schools still have staff create all their sites.

Kim, you might want to send your query to the Production list, too,
since I think it may include more support staff:

UC Berkeley lets instructors control their own course site creation
(including the ability to create sites for particular sections of a
class, or even to create a site for more than one class). But I'm not
well equipped to answer your questions, except to say that yes, we
definitely had to customize the site creation workflow.

Best,
Ray
