[WG: Sakai QA] sakai-2.8.0 update (IE9 issues)

This is release prep week for sakai-2.8.0 but the recent release of Microsoft IE9 has intersected with our release timeline in a less than harmonious manner.  Preliminary testing reveals that both the FCKEditor and CKEditor need to be upgraded in order to address IE9 incompatibilities.  IE9-related tickets have also been filed against tools such as Messages and Forums and Profile2.

Matt Jones of Michigan has produced a kernel patch (KNL-697) that forces IE9 to emulate IE8 by enabling compatibility mode in the request filter.   The patch can be enabled/disabled by the following sakai property: 

sakai.X-UA-Compatible=IE=EmulateIE8

KNL-697 does not depend on CKEditor/FCKEditor upgrades or any other IE9-related fixes.  Noah Botimer plans to clean up, document, test and then commit both FCKeditor/CKeditor for 2.8.1.

The question before us is whether or not we proceed with the release knowing that sakai-2.8.0 is currently incompatible with IE9 or instead produce a release candidate that includes the KNL-697 kernel fix?

My own view is that we should cut another release candidate this week in order for QA to test the KNL-697 patch; releasing sakai-2.8.0 without a workaround for IE9 incompatibilities will doom it to an early grave (when users subject it to IE9) and consign a good deal of release work to the category of wasted effort.

But what say you?  Proceed with the release as is or get the Jones patch in place and tested?
