Sure, it's possible, my tips:

* email or scoped eduPersonPrincipalName is the user's Sakai eid
* as part of a system, you should really run Shibboleth
* use Shibboleth and discovery for web-based authentication
* use a custom LDAP provider for WebDAV authentication
* user My Workspaces and course sites can have a custom skin so user can
always have their institutional branding
* use Delegated Access instead of granting lots of super-user access
* auto-create courses via webservices or use course templates for course
creation
