Yep 2.9 only. Well, it's 1.5 of Profile2 so theoretically you could run 1.5 in 2.8, see the version compatibility matrix:

Also, cookie was added here:
https://jira.sakaiproject.org/browse/PRFL-477

If this is deemed to breach the rules we may be able to replace the cookie with session storage, you'll lose the persistence though. DB storage is probably overkill but also an option. Time to change/implement would be the bottleneck though.

Daniel from Lancs wrote these parts, but one is to save previous search terms and one is to save the view preference between the wall and profile views.

Looking through the trunk-all source, there are a tools (osp/profile2) that also use cookies so those are worth verifiying. Otherwise this discussion came up with the same conclusions last month. (Only used for required functionality)

It looks like cookies are being used in connection with the searching capabilities and navigation? This should be verified.
