We are having 8GB RAM with 3 nodes (not 4 as i mentioned earlier),
each VM with the following JAVA_OPTS:

JAVA_OPTS="$JAVA_OPTS -server -Xms2048m -Xmx3072m -XX:PermSize=1024m
-XX:MaxPermSize=2048m -XX:NewSize=1024m -XX:MaxNewSize=2048m
-Djava.awt.headless=true -Dhttp.agent=Sakai
-Dorg.apache.jasper.compiler.Parser.STRICT_QUOTE_ESCAPING=false
-Dsun.lang.ClassLoader.allowArraySyntax=true"

This should fit quite well in your case too, with the 4 VMS and well
within 16GB available.

regards.
