[Building Sakai] Sakai 2+3 hybrid deployment scenario Clarifications

Dear All,
               After going through the documentation at 
https://confluence.sakaiproject.org/display/KERNDOC/Configuring+a+Hybrid+Deployment
I am a bit confused about the deployment structure for sakai in hybrid mode.
Here is my understanding
1-Setup Sakai 3(Nakamura) with a DB instance for persistence
2-Setup Sakai 2 with a separate DB instance for persistence
3-Wire up Sakai 2 and 3 for two way integration

Questions
Please clarify if my understanding is  off?
Do both the database vendors have to be the same ?
Which sakai (two or three?) be the main access point for users?
