[Building Sakai] Sakai 2.8 Assignment Information

Does anyone know how to make the assignment information public without the need to log in? We need this functionality so parents can see the assignment information without logging in. We do not permit parents to login to Sakai at present as we do not want to manage yet another set of logins, plus a little thing called FERPA and other privacy rules that are especially applicable in a K-12 environment.

I can retrieve the assignment information from the database directly by accessing tables assignment_assignment and assignment_content however the instructions information in assignment_content appears to be encrypted and not readable. Any ideas to make it accessible? Secondly is there a way to deep link to a file attached to the assignment information without being logged in? I am trying to create a separate page outside of Sakai that can display this information and does not require additional faculty input.

Ideally it would be great in the future to see an option when an assignment is created to simply check if you want to include the assignment information (in full) in the public view of a Sakai Course. For example we have Public announcements, resources, syllabus, an added assignments section would be advantageous. We know that you can post an assignment announcement, but the details are limited and require added input when all the information already lives in the assignment area.

Any input or advice would be great.

Thank you
Paul
