[Building Sakai] Word count in messages/forums tool

The users would love to have a word count. Upon searching I see word count in screen shots in issues in the jira (http://jira.sakaiproject.org/browse/MSGCNTR-273).  So the question is does it need to be enabled?  How do we get it? Is it a feature in a newer version?  We are running 2.7.x.
