[Building Sakai] Who is using the Search Tool?

Thanks David.

That's how we see our implementation going. I think we would selectively install it on sites that requested it, but stealth it for all others.

Our scale isn't quite yours, but it's growing rapidly.

So, the search will search all Sakai sites or just the one it is installed in? Curious as to how it functions.

We use search in a limited way at Michigan. It is only installed in a few sites and we run the actual searches on a separate host we keep out of the cluster. Running search on each server seemed to have impractical resource requirements at our scale when we looked at it a couple of years ago. We are just unclear on the practical implications of letting everybody use it on all content at our scale so we don't have a plan to expand it's usage.

Search does a good job at covering a lot of the data entered in Sakai including announcements, wiki entries, and uploaded files.

We're looking to investigate the Search tool and I've found some info on it from Ian Boston on Confluence. Who is using it in practice?

Does it have the capability to even search documents that are stored on the file system or just database contents?
