[Building Sakai] Questions about new synoptic tool for Messages & Forums

Jason,

I can't speak for our user's (maybe someone else reading this from IU can?) but I personally like to know the context of where the new message is coming from. Its like a filter on your mailbox... :) Also, by breaking it up this way, it was easier to know where to redirect the user (ie. Which messages or forums tool). If we would do something like a massive dump of all messages into a single mailbox (not sure how to do this for forums), then we would run back into the same performance issues that took our production server down. This is supposed to be a quick glance at all your classes so you know if you need to read something new and for which class.

Bryan,

This looks neat.

I must admit, I'm a bit curious though - when I conceptualize Messages, I tend to think of them as being more person-to-person, and less focused on the context of a site - e.g. I'd expect users to have more of a "you've got mail" messages summary.

I'm wondering if IU users might just be using the tool differently than I'd expect though.

Sounds good. I can put in some time setting this up since this will help with community acceptance. It'll have to be sometime after Aug 23rd. I'm currently really busy.

A property might be a good idea. Ever since Messages and Forums became
distinct tools, it's become dangerous to assume their use together,
though I know Indiana does, and heavily. A flag which makes clear this
institutional configuration could provide a useful check for both this
and other imagined new features.
