[Deploying Sakai] Sakai 2.8.0 chat not updating across app servers

We recently upgraded to sakai 2.8.0 (from 2.6.3) and chat messages are 
not appearing to participants on different app servers unless they 
manually refresh the tool. It works as usual between users on the same 
tomcat.

We have 4 tomcats behind apache using mod_jk

My guess is that it's a non-shared caching issue.  Is there special 
configuration required for chat on multiple app servers now?  Is anyone 
with a similar setup experiencing this?
