[WG: I18N & L10N] French start to use Crowdin, will you join us ?

Dear all,

On behalf of Japanese Sakai community, I would explain the status of
translation using Transifex in Japan.

In 2012, we evaluated Transifex and confirmed that it had a capability of ;
- Import/export of translation memory
- Support for Java properties, po and so on
- Community translation
- Double-byte character
- Performance

In 2013, we started the project which was aiming to develop a common
translation memory exchange (TMX) for higher education in Japan and
deploy the translation methodology to unify the translation process
for higher education software. Fortunately, this project was approved
by Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Grant in three
years. Along the project plan, we are developing TMXs not only for
Sakai, but also for Moodle, and Mahara.

About the status as of Oct. 17, 2013, we translated Sakai-2.9.3-all by
94% as you can see at
https://www.transifex.com/projects/p/sakai-293/language/ja/
At this time no problem is found, we believe that Transifex has the
capability for translating Sakai-2.9.3-all into Japanese.

I think that one of future subjects is cost because Transifex is not
free basically.
Talking about our project, we solicited Transifex for the discount by
explaining that our project is open source and non-profit. As a
result, Transifex kindly offered us a special plan for 600k words at
the discounted charge of 2000$ per a year. Normally, the cost depends
on the number of words as you can see at
https://www.transifex.com/plans/ .
The number of word is calculated as number of words of source codes
multiplied by number of languages. Since Sakai-2.9.3-all has 80k
words, we can only set 7 languages by the 600k words plan.
If Apereo foundation will propose Transifex as one of the community
translation platforms, the coordination with Transifex corp. should be
required.

Now I recognized that Crowdin and Transifex are being evaluated by
regional communities. And I think that we cannot limit the translation
platforms to one, too quickly. In a few years, regional communities
will try the translation platforms. After accumulating the
experiences, we will discuss about the advantages and disadvantages of
the translation systems from the global viewpoint.
