[sakai2-tcc] FYI - Fwd: [DG: Teaching & Learning] Reporting Out and Call Schedule > Sakai Teaching and Learning Group

A very constructive conversation.

I will try my best to make the next meeting and with Neal act as a link with the TCC. I expect others in the TCC will embrace this positive movement foward and also attend.

I would like also to reinforce Neals point about unfunded mandates. Enhanced functionality requires sustainability and resources. Lets push in the same direction.

Regards Alan,

Neal: Thanks for posting this to the TCC list (you beat me to it!) and for being on the call, your comments and insights were very helpful in moving the discussion forward.

All,

Besides sharing the outcomes from the call with the TCC (and others on this list), I had also wanted share an observation in hopes of avoiding any misunderstandings or miscommunications which I think we all know can more easily occur when we're not all together in a face-to-face setting.

If you look over the notes from the call you'll see that we had a very broad ranging discussion that was primarily around how we might collaborate with the TCC more. The group on the call include folks who have been involved with Sakai almost since the beginning to very new participants who's first experience was a couple of weeks ago at the Open Apereo conference. As a result, you'll see comments and suggestions that may include things which we've tried before and which did not work well or about strategies that are not likely to be embraced by our open source community. My fear is that by just scanning such notes that some could get the wrong impression about the group's interests and plans.

To address this I'd like to encourage all of us to actively question and comment on points that are coming up in discussions on lists so that we can dialog about them as means to avoid misunderstandings. As Neal noted, it would be great to have more TCC folks on our calls (we'll be holding a series of weekly calls on Wednesdays, details below) but I realize that this may be impractical so I'll be sure to continue to provide email updates. If there is a point in time when the TCC would like to schedule a call with the T&L group just let me know.

Thanks,

Josh

Hi TCC,

I attended this call, please see below. Your ears may be burning :-). I'll try to attend these and can keep you informed, but you may want to consider more active participation. There could be an opportunity here.

Cheers,
Neal

Colleagues,

My thanks to the 13 or so folks who participated in our first Sakai Teaching and Learning (T&L) conference call following the Open Apereo conference. It was great to hear voice who've not been involved in awhile as well as many new participants. As I mentioned at the end of the call, I'm following up to update the larger community as well as suggest plans for a regular conference call.

CALL SUMMARY: Much of the call continued the dialog that was started at the conference on how the T&L group might collaborate more with other groups in the Sakai community, particularly the Technical Coordination Committee or TCC. There was some review of past community efforts, for those who were newer to the community, around things such as "requirements gathering" which have had mixed success and some of the lessons that have been learned from those experiences. In particular, the issue of "unfunded mandates" (i.e. bringing forward requirements without resources to support the development work) was noted as a concern. This lead to some discussion of how the T&L group might be able to get involved in seeking resources from institutional decision makers. A complete set of notes from the call can be found at: https://confluence.sakaiproject.org/display/PED/Wednesday+June+19+Call+Notes

NEXT STEPS AND CALL SCHEDULE: Although I recognize that folks are busy, I'm going to suggest that we plan for weekly calls over the next 1-2 months as means to keep our momentum going and also help address the fact that I anticipate people being out over the summer for holidays, etc. Unless there are objections to this schedule, I'd suggest that we continue with the Wednesday from 2-3 PM Eastern Time day/time as it seemed to work for the majority of people.

ACTION ITEM > Please reply back to me by Monday, June 24th if Wednesday from 2 - 3 PM Eastern Time does NOT work for you. Based on what I hear I'll either confirm the call on Monday or suggest a new time.

Finally, I have updated the Confluence Teaching and Learning wiki page to reflect our current work. You can access this page at: https://confluence.sakaiproject.org/display/PED

Thanks, Josh
