[Using Sakai] Inconsistent Event Logs between Site Stats & Forums

We've been noticing some very drastic disparities between SiteStats and
Forums in terms of event counts, particularly around posting responses.

On 10/8/14, Harold Hale and I did the following in a Forum:

   - Katie created one Conversation.
   - Harold made one reply to the Conversation.
   - Katie made one reply to the Conversation.

*Forums reflects these actions as:*
Name[image: Sort By Name] Authored Read Unread Percent Read

 Golus, Katie 2 2 1 67% Hale, Harold 1 2 1 67%

*Below is the Site Stats log of those same actions:*

Name Event Date Total

Golus, Katie New thread 10/8/14 2
Golus, Katie Read thread 10/8/14 2
Golus, Katie Response thread 10/8/14 3
Hale, Harold New thread 10/8/14 1
Hale, Harold Read thread 10/8/14 2
Hale, Harold Response thread 10/8/14 3
Both agree on the number read (and that seems consistent with what we would
have viewed based on the order we posted), but they're very different in
terms of the new and responded counts, even after only one new conversation
and a single response each. When I look at active course sites, the counts
in SiteStats are easily several hundred higher than I expect them to be.

Can anyone explain the SiteStats log? Even knowing for sure if it
consistently double counts some actions would be useful in helping us and
faculty understand what SiteStats means by these labels and numbers.

Thanks,
Katie
