[Using Sakai] Ensuring viewable but not downloadable files

Thanks Stephen.

Just wanted to share our workaround, albeit not stringently secure (meaning that it excludes the scenario of that of an extremely tech savvy student ☺ ).

We uploaded the MP4 file using the Lessons tool (Add Multimedia) so a student can watch the video without the obvious/ easy option of downloading it and then
if then hid the Resources tool (which would have allowed easy access to download the mp4 file. )

Hoping it’ll appease the faculty member for their current urgent need but will explore the more secure option you’ve suggested. Thanks again!

Regards
Fatima

Hi Fatima

Sakai will only serve files, so even if you have a player that only plays back the file (e.g. with progressive download) the file is still there and could be downloaded.

To stream video (without a downloadable file) you’d have to use something like Flash streaming (rtmp) with a product like wowza, red or nginx-rtmp.

Stephen

Dear All

We’ve had a request for MP4 files to be hosted (i.e streamed) but to ensure that they’re NOT downloadable. Is this doable in SAKAI?

Thanks

Fatima
