Chuck,

Yes, we are well aware of this product. While it is an excellent music
composition tool, supports LTI, and even allows students and faculty to
work collaboratively on a composition, it is not a teaching or assessment
system for basic notation skills. Students need a solid foundation in the
basics of music notation before they can really understand how to use such
a powerful tool. Other products such as Sibelius and LenMus are available,
but are also composition focused. I have, in fact, proposed an initiative
at U-M to use NoteFlight as the basis for a project involving team
compositions. But, that's another discussion...

What we are looking for is an application that can be used primarily for
the following:

   - Perform a complete entry placement exam assessment of incoming
Freshmen competency in basic music notation
   - Provide tutorial and practice for students lacking proficiency in
these basic skills, focusing on individual needs

The skills to be covered are:

   - Reading/Writing notes on staff
   - Key Signatures
   - Rhythm and Meters
   - Scales
   - Intervals
   - Chords

As for third party products: The school currently recommends students use
Teoria (http://www.teoria.com/exercises/index.php), which provides
*some*tutorial for the basics, but: requires the student to organize
her own
lessons, and provides no assessment the faculty can use for placement.
Music Theory Skill Builder, from Oxford University Press, is great on
assessment, but almost completely lacking in tutorial content.
