[Using Sakai] Classifying students by programmes

Hello,

Is there a way to classify users in categories other than registered and 
guest? If so, is there a way to make sites available to a particular 
class only? For example, we are using Sakai to support seminars in our 
PhD programme and we would like our PhD students, *but no other 
students*, to freely register the seminars they will to.
