[Using Sakai] [DG: Teaching & Learning] Agenda for This Week's T&L Call (Wed., June 30)

Hi everyone,
I wanted to send a reminder that I am going to be on vacation for the next 2 Wednesdays, so I will not be able to do the audio recording.
If anyone is interested in doing it, there are many ways it could be accomplished, but here is what I did:
I set up an old Dell Latitude 100 running Windows XP with Skype and Audacity running. I went into the audio settings of XP and changed the recording input from Microphone to Stereo Mix. This is actually not a trivial step: newer Dell laptops have removed the Stereo Mix option, which records everything happening on the computer in clear digital audio. It was very easy to capture streaming audio this way, so my guess is that they got pressure from recording studios. So it has to be an older machine. I don't think there is any way to do this on a Mac, but I could be wrong.
I use Skype to do the call, and run Audacity in the background, recording the whole thing (you need to check the recording input in the Audacity interface as well). There is usually quite a large difference in volume for each speaker, so I try to follow along, raising the level for quiet people, lowering it for louder people. I do minimal editing and then export it to mp3.
Last time I discovered that with this setup, I can't actually talk through Skype. Apparently the Stereo Mix does not include the microphone. So if you do it this way, you need to make the call on a regular phone, in addition to having Skype running on a laptop. If you had some sort of pickup for your phone that fed directly into a laptop running Audacity, it would accomplish the same goal.
See you in 2 weeks,
Ken

Subject: [DG: Teaching & Learning] Agenda for This Week's T&L Call (Wed., June 30)

Greetings all:

The agenda for this week is up on confluence at:
http://confluence.sakaiproject.org/display/PED/07-07-10+Conference+Call
. Please feel free to add items to the agenda before the meeting.

PREPARING FOR THIS WEEK’S MEETING:

There are several things you can do to prepare for the meeting:

· The first topic on the agenda is internal and external communications.
Please give some thought to the following questions before the meeting:
How can the work of our subgroups move forward in a way that keeps the
entire T&L and broader Sakai communities informed without overwhelming
everyone with the details? Should we create separate mailing lists for
each subgroup and then use the T&L list for reporting out and calls for
participation? How frequently should the entire T&L group meet? Weekly?
Monthly? Bimonthly? How should we address the challenges (long distance
costs and logistics) of working in different time zones? Should we try
to identify a lead facilitator for each subgroup or let the process
evolve organically?

· A separate brainstorming page has been posted for each area of
interest/initiative that has been identified thus far and there’s a
signup list at the bottom of each page. If you haven’t already, please
add your name to the initiatives to which you personally would like to
devote time over the coming 6-12 months. The links below will take you
directly to each brainstorming page:
