[Using Sakai] New Site Creation

We allow faculty to create their course site each semester here at Texas State.

If a faculty member is listed as the instructor of record of a class, then that class is available for the faculty to create a course site for.
At the end of the semester, one of our programmers runs a script to unpublish the expired semester course site, so the students only see their current courses.

Here at UMich, Instructors (or their admins or teaching assistants) create course sites. We don't auto create a site for every course since there are so many variations - an instructor using one site for all their courses, or one site for each, or one site for all cross listed courses (or not using a site or using something of their own). We have talked about autocreating, but always decide that the manual cleanup would be too great, and also confusing to students. I know other institutions do successfully autocreate though.

Hi Everyone,

We have a question about your sakai relating to how new sites are created. We are getting ready to establish integration with our backend management system and we are trying to decide what the best way to handle new course creations will be. Currently, with our blackboard instance, we have a program that creates the courses manually before each semester starts but we are trying to see if that is indeed the best way to go with sakai.

We talked about the possibility of making the faculty members responsible for creating their own courses in the LMS and adding the enrollments but we're not sure that's the best idea either. What is the process some of you use out there?

Thanks,
