I'm not sure how you would auto move anyone that is not already using a
Gmail account as they would need an account. Not 100% sure.  IMO people
should just be given notice to create the account, then they could be
signed up, same as for github.

As for the auto forward, again,  just make the switch over at some point.
When people stop receiving email and their sent ones bounce, they'll figure
it out by looking at the latest email they received saying to move. It may
not even be possible to create the auto forward due to the account issue i
mentioned.

In summary, hard cut over with notice,  no need for transition.
