Hi All,

Thanks Doug for setting up this list and to those of you who replied to Philip's email. It was great to hear about to your interest and work so far on mobile. Firstly let me introduce myself, my name is Tim Klapdor and I am a Media Technologist here at Charles Sturt University. As Philip has explained our proposed mobile learning project has been approved and funded and we will be working on it from now through to mid-2013 and I will be the project manager.

A brief overview of the project - the major spending for the project has been on staff to form a mobile development team – this includes a graphic designer and a UI developer with a mobile developer joining the team around June/July next year. We are focusing our work on a number of areas primarily on mobilising Sakai, mobilising our subject materials and trialling a range of devices in different learning situations.

Our primary work on Sakai for the next 9 months or so is to mobilise some of the key tools that will be running in hybrid at CSU in 2012. We hope to work within the Appcelerator Titanium mobile framework which is being deployed in another project to create a CSU app for students. We then hope to move work on to mobilising Sakai OAE as a whole environment. Our current vision for this will be to concentrate on doing this as a web app to maximise access across platforms and devices. This will hopefully move on to developing native application(s) that take advantage of device capabilities, touch and gesture features.

I haven't been active with the Sakai community for very long, so I am coming to this as a bit of an outsider, but CSU is keen to work with the community members to help develop a mobile agenda for both OAE and CLE. Our work for hybrid deployment means we will need a foot in both camps. The development work done so far is impressive and we would like to build on that and work cooperatively with other institutions. CSU will be able to contribute resources to work with the community and assist in development from this point of time through to July 2013.

I support the proposal document and the suggested next steps would be great to consolidate the work done so far to develop a common vision and goals. I would be keen to be part of any group being formed to work in this area.

I will be at the Ausakai conference and speaking with Philip during his allotted time – it would be great to catch up with those attending this event.
