I believe this is the recommended value for MySQL:

  defaultTransactionIsolationString at javax.sql.BaseDataSource
=TRANSACTION_READ_COMMITTED

What kind of performance issues are you running into?  What version of
MySQL?  Any specific slow queries or operations?
