[Building Sakai] sakai.X-UA-Compatible settings in production

Hello,
Reviving an old thread. CLE 2.9 only formally supports versions 8 and 9 of ie, plus other browsers. While in the past, we seem to have forced browsers to emulate slightly older browsers (below), I'm not that 2.9 is doing that. So ie8, which is the default on many of our public clusters, has a setting that display intranets in compatibility view, and I think our local installation is considered intranet, meaning it is rendered in ie7.

There are a couple of changes we have made to the skin that just don't work in ie7 and I'm wondering if any other schools have had similar problems and forced their 2.9 installation to render in ie8? If there is a specific reason that ie7 fell off, should this be fixed?

And since ie10 is also untested and may have some issues, shouldn't we force ie8 and 9 for that reason as well?

The recommendations for Sakai 2.5 & 2.6 was for IE7. This was just provided via a patch. IE8 mostly worked but had some patches that weren't backported.

2.5 & 2.6 were recommended to be patched and set to IE=EmulateIE7 (SAK-16074)

For 2.7 and 2.8, a patch was committed as you mentioned (KNL-697) because some features were completely broken by IE9 and not fixable in time to get the release out. (Mostly around FCKEditor)

2.7&2.8 were by default set to IE=EmulateIE8

Whether your choose IE7 or IE8 would depend on your users (if you have google analytics) and local testing. Both should be equally compatible. Hopefully by 2.9 we can switch to CKEditor by default and have all other IE9 related issues fixed. But then they'll have IE10 out so we'll probably still need an IE=EmulateIE9 . :)

SAK-20283 [1] is an umbrella jira for IE9 issues. It still had 4 outstanding. All of these were temporarily resolved with this flag.

Hello,

Indiana University has very recently successfully upgraded to version 2.7 of Sakai! One of the newer-ish items we discovered during the upgrade was the ability for browsers to emulate an older version, such as IE emulating IE7 via this setting in the sakai.properties:

sakai.X-UA-Compatible=IE=EmulateIE7

We found an issue with Profile 2 so far without the browser emulation forcing a compatibility mode with IE8, but think there are others based off comments I read from https://jira.sakaiproject.org/browse/KNL-697

Mostly writing to the list to see what other institutions are doing for their production environments as far as their emulation settings may go. Additionally, any specific tools or areas where a newer browser has a problem would be good to know, too. Any concerns people may have thought of for their implementation decisions is appreciated, as well.

Thanks!
Greg
