[Building Sakai] Portal neo CHAT - loading problem

Hello,

I have a question related to the chat in the portal 2.9:

I have a user with more than 1000 connections in profile2. The requests to the portal-chat /latestData are taking from 4-12 seconds.
Because of this I end up with 2-3 requests in the same time to the chat and some of those request will be aborted because of timeouts and I will get the popup saying 'getLatestMessages: the chat server is unavailable.... '(see the image below)

Is there a number of maximum connections supported? Is there a setting that I can do to avoid this?

I tried increasing the timeout for ajax calls to the chat, and the calls are not aborted any more and I don't get the annoying popup anymore,
but I am thinking if the chat can overload my server with requests like this, so that the server will not respond to other requests because it is too busy with the chat requests.
Can this happen in PRD? Can I avoid this?
