[Building Sakai] tomcat startup hanging w/ sakai trunk

You need to use the sakai-trunk-all branch (
https://source.sakaiproject.org/svn//sakai/branches/sakai-trunk-all/) I
think. It pulls all the source down rather than pulling binary assemblies.
Try that.
