Thanks everyone for all of your feedback!
Mozilla's Open Badge platform looks very promising. It is also interesting to see and hear about others working on similar things. I'm currently researching gamification for a class research project and will be developing a few simple prototypes for the class as well (I've very interested in continuing to work on this beyond the class too). I'll post anything I develop or find to the list. :)

It looks like with a lot of the work and infrastructure that Mozilla and others have been setting up that it's more a question of figuring out what things you want to award badges for and what you want to on the badge design.
Would it be something more automatic and based on some predefined criteria like Khan Academy or something awarded by professors similar to the Moodle Stamp module [1]. In either case, a lot of planning would have to go around what to award for, and while it's possible it might appear in profile(2) it would probably be something separate.
http://dmlcompetition.net/ has been running competitions for a number of years about this and feel like they might be close to getting to some standard, though most of the competitions have been pretty specific. I'm looking forward to when http://www.badgestack.com/ releases their code as they are already LTI and "look" like they've got good stuff too.

Hi Dylan,
I've been watching the Mozilla Badge Backpack efforts, which would be very interesting to integrate with Sakai.
Cheers,
Steve

Hello,
Lately I've been doing research on the subject of Gamification (the use of game design techniques, game thinking and game mechanics to enhance non-game contexts). I feel like this would be a wonderful concept to roll into an LMS. After some quick googling, I found some posts by Steve Swinsburg about "badges" being integrated into Profile2, these were from June 2011 though. Did anything ever come of this? I'd be interested in collaborating. :)
Thanks!!
