[Building Sakai] Creating a gradebook category by webservice

Hello all,
i'm working on a webservice to create gradebook categories&items. I can
create new assignments by GradebookService but cannot create categories or
categorized items. I've tried to access GradebookManager by
ComponentManager(org_sakaiproject_tool_gradebook_business_GradebookManager)
but it's not visible to my webservice class. Should i go with direct
database operations or ?
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
We're on 2.5.x branch.
