[Building Sakai] DRAFT: Installing git on Mac OS X

This is good feedback - thanks. I have reworked the opening paragraph to cut to the chase. Does this satisfy?:

Installing git<http://git-scm.com/> on Mac OS X

While there are many ways<http://www.google.com/search?q=Installing+git+on+OS+X> to install git on OS X, the simplest way is to install a pre-compiled binary package. You can find them here: http://git-scm.com/download. If you have any issues with the pre-compiled packages, then try MacPorts<http://www.macports.org/>.

Seriously. Forget out the purist "right way" and make the easy way the
obvious one. People are a lot less likely to give up and leave when
the instructions are not a mile long. Assume that people are busy and
looking at your project is not the most important thing in their lives
and they will thank you for it. Link to the more detailed stuff as
optional and recommended for the technically advanced.

Also, I have had zero issues with the binary version of git so far.
Not sure what all the issues you linked were about but this is my
experience.

That's probably fine. Though it kind of makes it sound like you are a
bad person ( honestly, I've been pretty happy with my click install
version of git when I have to use OS X ).

I just wish our quick start was quicker, for something that is
essentially just a java project people are going to load into Eclipse.

For instance on the K2 Getting started page couldn't we just say:

git clone git://github.com/ieb/open-experiments.git
cd open-experiments/slingtests/osgikernel # etc etc.

I'm a big fan of people having ( github | bitbucket | launchpad )
accounts, but when I want to try out someones project I really just want
to check it out.

I think it's good that we have these instructions for macports, and
github, and whatever else, but I don't they should preclude fast
instructions for people who just want to get the code and build it. I
think it's just a matter of providing relative documentation for folks
who wish to do different amounts of customization.

Okay see if this satisfies:

      Precompiled Binaries

For those of you that do not have the patience to experience the
magical goodness of MacPorts, I might suggest downloading a
precompiled package: http://git-scm.com/download.

Probably still worth linking too though, since it's listed on their page
for OS X, which makes it seems 'official like'. I agree that macports
is nice and I've used it to get The Gimp and Dia, but it seems to take a
really long time, which might be too long for someone who just wants to
check out 3akai and use eclipse.

Yes - it may be easier, but in my experience these 3rd party
packages tend to not be well supported over time and never have the
official blessing of the parent project. Over the years of trying
to rely on these kinds of packages, I have been sorely disappointed
as they tend to be slow to provide updates. It makes it hard to
write documentation that can stand the test of time. MacPorts has
been there for me from day one and has been very consistent. Not to
mention, you only need to learn it once to get access to over 12,000
applications ported to OSX. L

It looks ok, but you should really mention this which is much much
much easier (and what I use).
