FYI - I am currently running 10.6.2, 64-bit java 1.6 with the following settings for both Sakai 2 and Sakai 3 development:
export JAVA_HOME=/Library/Java/Home
export JAVA_OPTS="-d64 -server -Xmx1024m -XX:MaxPermSize=512m -Djava.awt.headless=true -Dsun.lang.ClassLoader.allowArraySyntax=true"

The "-Dsun.lang.ClassLoader.allowArraySyntax=true" is for Sakai 2 compatibility. L
