At the Denver 2x project planning meeting we've targeted Tomcat 6 as a servlet container option for Sakai 2.8.0.
Regarding, Ian's earlier question: "Although these issues also exist in TC6, is there a reason why you are not testing on 6 ? The kernel was patched about 2 years ago to run in TC6."
A number of us raised the issue of moving to Tomcat 6 for Sakai 2.7 before and during the Boston Conference (2009) but looking back over the project planning notes the idea appears to have been scrapped over concerns of insufficient QA resources.
SAK-10720 details work performed on Tomcat 6 during 2008 but ends with the comment: "Sakai 2.6 will not be using Tomcat 6." I suspect that concerns over QA resources played a role in this decision too.
I'll leave it to Alan to provide a definitive opinion but I suspect that expanding 2.6.x->2.6.3 QA to include testing deployments to both Tomcat 5.5 and Tomcat 6 is beyond our current capabilities. Moreover, tossing Tomcat 6 in to 2.6.x testing at this point in time would undoubtedly delay the release of sakai-2.6.3, a maintenance release that is long overdue.
