[Portfolio] OSP QA for Sakai 10

Hi Beth and Megan,

Thank you for being clear about the challenges of QAing IU's OSP contributions to Sakai 10. Please know that there are still many current OSP users that are counting on the code continuing in Sakai, at least for a while longer. Until now they have depended upon IU and UMich to support the OSP code. At the same time, Three Canoes has focused its work on customizing OSP data structures for their best use in each institutional context. The changes being discussed are most likely inevitable, but they will have an impact on many existing OSP users. I am hopeful that IU will complete its contributions sometime in 2014 and that somehow the existing community will step up to attend to the QA issues at hand regardless of whether OSP is stealthed in Sakai 10.

If either of you plan to attend the Apereo Unconference next week, I hope we can further discuss the current situation there.

Janice

  Hi Beth,
Unfortunately we don’t have time in the short term as we’re working on an 2.9.x upgrade that we’re planning to rollout in March. Over the past few months IU did contribute back some customizations – but we had to stop because we were running into too many existing bugs in the code. I’m hopeful that we’ll return to it later this year.

  Hi all,

There are currently 5 critical and 1 blocker OSP bugs listed in JIRA, and unfortunately it's not clear to me where to turn to for developer support for these. I believe that's the main concern of the larger Sakai community: who is supporting the OSP tools. There has been a lot of OSP commits from IU over the last few months, but I'm not sure if they're able to commit resources to fixing some of these critical bugs (I'm cc'ing Megan for her opinion).

Since the OSP tools are currently limited to the portfolio site type in the default configuration, I would suggest that we disable adding portfolio sites in the default build, with documentation on how to enable them. I believe the feeling was that we shouldn't be promoting the OSP tools to new institutions interested in ePortfolios, and instead point them in new implementations, such as Karuta.

Hope all is well with everyone!

 Hi Janice,

There looks like there is momentum in the community for a proposal to stealth the OSP tool for Sakai 10. I'm wondering how this group feels about this? For those not familiar with the concept, a stealth tool is a tool that is running in Sakai, but is not available to be added to a site in Worksite Setup. It must be added to the site by an administrator. The thinking is that there is not enough commitment to maintaining and enhancing the OSP tool to keep it visible as a standard tool selection.

 Thanks,
 Neal

Hello Neal (and OSP Community members),

The next OSP Community meeting is scheduled for 11 AM EST on Monday, February 3. I have placed an item on our agenda to discuss options for the QA of OSP items in Sakai 10.

So far, our agenda for the February OSP Community meeting is as follows:

              • OSP QA for Sakai 10

              • Update on the Karuta (new portfolio functionality from HEC Montréal) Apereo Incubation Proposal

I hope the other members of the OSP Community will join me then.

 Janice
