Yes, this feature (parents/sons) can be contributed. For us is interesting
that something like this be at Sakai to open the scope of sakai users to
schools.

But the feature is not exactly as Jira says but the result for parents is
almost similar. How it works:

The parent has in their workspace some special tools. One of them is a
limited version of SU tool where he can only enter in Sakai as their
son/sons. So he don’t need the son password. Once is inside as the son he
can see the same the son can see (and do). Obviously he could do the same if
the son gives him their user and password.

At our solution, the parent has other sites (one per son) where he can
communicate with the teachers of that son. Teachers will have access to all
the sites of their students (not workspace, is another kind of site where
students don’t need to have access, is only for parents and teachers) This
site is the site to talk about a student. We have the “notes” tool where
teachers cand write notes with different level of access (private, for the
parents, for all people in the site) and parents or other teachers can
answer.

We can continue this discussion at the JIRA or in private and maybe we can
arrive to a intermediate solution between your idea and our solution.

Diego.

This is absolutely fantastic! Great work and congratulations to all
involved!

The parent/auditor function is excellent too. I had an idea for this a while
back: https://jira.sakaiproject.org/browse/SAK-19059 as we have people
interested in using Sakai in primary education.

Is there any chance this can be contributed back? Especially the
parent/child function.

cheers,

Steve

Hi to all:

We have finished the development of the “Sakai simplified tablet interface
for children in hospitals”, as we have announced in the list time ago using
restful services. This web interface (is not native) shows only the basic
tools of sakai in a very simple way to be used for children with a tactile
interface. The aim of the project is to use Sakai for children in Hospitals
and allow them to continue the learning in their rooms with a tactile
dispositive.

You can see a demo (in English) here: <http://youtu.be/1o5296xIqa8>
http://youtu.be/1o5296xIqa8
you can see Chuck’s book as background and
the Spanish Sakai’s one too ;)

Anyway, this interface is not only for children you can adapt it changing
skin for other uses because is a very simple interface of Sakai for use in a
mobile tablet so it can be used in a University, college, enterprise
.

In Spain all the hospitals have a team of teachers for the children and a
school room for them, but sometimes children can’t move or can’t stay
enough time out of their bedrooms, so with this system, teacher in the
hospital can send tasks and resources to them (teacher will use sakai usual
interface) and they can do it from the bed. There are several hospitals
using a tactile screen for each bed with a lot of services, one of them can
be this one. If Hospital don’t have those screens can use tablets as seen in
the video.

We have modified Sakai too to improve the experience for parents. Parents
can connect to the system (with a standard Sakai interface too) and
communicate with the teachers. Those users are “student-related” so they can
view the work done by their son but not the work done by other students
(this is new in Sakai and in general in LMS’s, the “individual watcher
user”). You can define in this Sakai a hierarchy of users with parents and
sons. We have done other tools as “notes” tool where teacher can add
information about the students and select if parents can read it or not.

You can see a demo of this changes (this is in Spanish, sorry) here:
