Job Summary

Information and Technology Services (ITS) has an exciting opportunity for TWO (2) Senior Business Systems Analysts (BSA) within ITS Teaching & Learning to work on academic technology systems including CTools, the University's central collaboration and course management system. CTools is based on Sakai, a robust Community Source J2EE product that is in use by hundreds of institutions around the world. As a Senior BSA you will be responsible for defining requirements, managing projects, and coordinating development efforts to improve our enterprise-class system. In addition to working with local constituencies at U-M, you will also interact with a globally distributed community to help evolve Sakai into a next generation environment for highly interactive and integrated online collaboration.

Note: The starting salary may vary and is dependent upon the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.

Responsibilities*

Analyze business processes and systems and translate them into written technical requirements. Develop designs, including design documentation, for new applications or modifications to existing applications. Identify areas for improvement and make recommendations for enhancements. Update design documents.

Study, develop and demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of internal procedures, business processes, and systems within the scope of a functional area. Lead co-workers, teams, and business office SMEs. Research and assist in evaluation of new technologies. Understand impact of process change on security roles. 

Conduct analysis of business and user needs. Write and document functional requirements. Identify and resolve dependency and integration issues across product and service areas.

Manage relationships with customers, analyze their needs and identify solutions. Coach other staff. Lead cross-functional teams, implementation or enhancements of business process improvements or upgrade phases. Collaborate with customers on the resolution of business process issues. Facilitate the creation and implementation of new or changed systems or interfaces. Serve as a resource to others on technologies. Support production support efforts, provide content recommendations, review documentation, and deliver training. Develop, modify, test, document and implement reports and queries.

Develop and execute test plans to support infrastructure, software upgrades and releases. Create and maintain test data, and coordinate user involvement. 

Understand batch job streams and their dependencies. Provide application support, including problem analysis and resolution, on-call support, tier 3 help desk support, and end-user support.

Manage projects to meet customer and organization objectives. Prioritize tasks and resolve issues to ensure compliance to project deliverables. Ensure projects are completed within time and budget requirements utilizing standard project and program management tools and techniques. Write status reports, update logs, participate in timeline decisions, provide input on proposals and on forecasting of required time and resources, and prioritize the tasks of others. Initiate and plan activities with performance support team to provide information and timing for training materials, communications, and other efforts.

Effectively present technical explanations in a way that is understood by all.

Required Qualifications*

Bachelors degree in a related field and/or equivalent combination of education, certification and experience. 
4 years of related experience in providing functional direction and leadership; resolving highly complex integration issues involving multiple technologies and business areas. 
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Excellent analytical and independent problem solving skills. 
Proficient with word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. 
Proven ability to work independently and assume a broad range of responsibility. 
Demonstrated ability to learn new software, understand technical information, and communicate it to others using clear, concise, and user-friendly language. 
Strong organizational skills and the ability to successfully complete multiple tasks within established and changing deadlines.
Proven ability to lead project teams to meet customer expectations. 
Ability to contribute and collaborate effectively as a member of a highly-functioning and productive team. 
Demonstrated knowledge of unit and/or Central office business and administrative processes or relevant industry experience. 
Demonstrated understanding of client relationship management, systems analysis and design, system testing, process mapping and improvement, project management, and production support.

Desired Qualifications*

Experience with Open and Community Source development projects.
Experience working with Teaching and Learning applications and/or large scale collaboration systems.
Familiarity with the Sakai Collaboration and Learning Environment.
Experience developing and maintaining large scale web applications.
2 years experience providing functional direction for staff, including coaching/performance management.
