[Contrib: Evaluation System] Coordination of BoF in Denver

I would agree with this sentiment.

Indeed, I am witness to the 'Ansorge Effect' in the sense that I'd ignored "Enable Instructor/Assistant Selections for grouping instructor related items (UCT)" thinking it wouldn't apply, now thatI see what it does, I think it is useful.

Another question I've had for a while is what the criteria is for a feature to be "Institution Specific"? For example, UCT's recent Instructor/TA selection feature seems to be broadly applicable. I may be wrong, but I didn't think it required any special behind-the-scenes magic for it to work for everyone, not just UCT.

It seems to me that options should only be added here if they require institution-specific configuration, knowledge, or external support software to work. Otherwise that category will just scare people away from using features that (should) work perfectly well for everyone.

Looking forward, I'm sure the PMC will guide new feature settings to land where they belong, but since Gonzalo is looking at doing a redesign right now I would recommend trimming the Institution Specific category to be as small as possible.

This is definitely looks better than the existing form. I think some of the issues with this page are also what Nicola mentioned in that the results of many of the options are unclear. We really need either better documentation and descriptions of what these buttons do and/or screen shots of the results. Some are obvious (Instructors allowed to create evaluations), but some require some in-depth knowledge of the application that I'm not sure about. These are mostly in the general settings. ("Use expert created templates", "Allow use of adhoc users")

And all of the institution specific settings seem pretty confusing. Perhaps an administrative help with links is something that would really be useful, as this is a pretty complex administrative screen, but still the best (and only) one in the system. Protecting any institution specific changes with a property is a good idea, but any future ones should come with a more detailed description of what they do.

Not to derail the evaluation conversation, I was talking about something like this at the 'configuration properties' session at the conference as a first step toward making config viewer/editor much more usable and understandable for system properties. I'd also proposed a similar facelift for some admin tools like realms (SAK-16601). If I get some time allocated to spend with Gonzalo I'm sure we could make these all much more user friendly. I think these are all similar problems. Improving configuration is something I'm very interested in.

All,

BTW, pursuant to the Admin UI redesign discussion, a couple months ago at my request Gonzalo the Wizard spent a few hours playing with the existing screens and came up with this prototype:

A rough take. The main thing is cutting the "General Settings" into usable chunks.

I can't promise his time on future efforts but this page could be used as a starting point for future design discussions.

Anyone have access to one of these?:

Are you talking about Skyping into the Sakai Bridge? I didn't think that worked and I had mixed results a while ago when I used xMeeting to connect via IP to the bridge. But maybe you're suggesting a multipoint Skype call and avoiding the bridge?

We may have to try both cell phone and IP connectivity depending on what we find at the hotel.

Will you have wireless access in the room? Skype would probably work better than phone via your iPhone.

So far I've gotten a few "that time will work" comments, and no complaints, so I went ahead and scheduled the Sakai 003 Conference Bridge for 11:45-13:00 MDT (GMT-7) on Thurs 6/17:

            Name: Sakai003 - Ad-hoc
            Telephone: +1-812-856-7060
            Internet:156.56.240.9
            Conference Code: 22386#
            PIN: 72524#

Unfortunately, I've been informed that the hotel will not have a conference phone available for us so we'll need to come up with another solution. I'm happy to rig up my iPhone with an external speaker and mic turned on (like we did in Boston), but that solution is less than optimal. Any other ideas for bringing in remote participants?

I am assuming 11:45 - 13:00 MDT? If so, I will be available to
join via telephone as I won't be at the conference this year.

All,

I thought I'd start the conversation around coordinating a BoF
during the Denver conference. My understanding is that the BoF
conference spaces will be available on an ad hoc, first-come first
served basis so it probably would be a good idea to get a time
identified early (i.e. now). We also will almost certainly have
people who want to participate remotely (calling in if possible) so
giving them some lead time would be good.

I've taken a quick look at the schedule and a working lunch on
Thurs from 11:45 - 13:00 seems like it might work. Is that time
workable for most folks?

Also, we should probably start building an agenda; here are a
couple items I suggest:

  - Update on from various institutions
  - Discussion of process for updating trunk
  - Discussion of plans for merging back in various branches
  - Discussion of QA resources and next tag

Other items?
