All,

From time to time we field questions about "what other people are doing with online evaluations." Recently, to inform some internal policy decisions, one of the U-M Associate Dean of Engineering queried his peers along these lines. Attached is a summary spreadsheet of responses received -- thought it might be of interest. The questions used to generate the responses are included below.

SMD.

> I recently surveyed the Big10+ Associate Deans of engineering (the “plus” includes schools like MIT, U Texas, Cornell...) about course evaluations. A summary of the results are attached. Most everybody is moving towards online evaluations, or is already there. Most see the problems we see with response rates, although the schools with more history tend to have higher response rates. Several note the utility of giving small numbers of points for submitting course evaluations. Most make numerical data available publically, either through university systems or through their student governments.

> The questions I asked were:
>
> Do you use an online or paper based system for course/instructor evalution?
> Are the evaluation questions set centrally, by department, by faculty, or some mix?
> Assuming there is some uniformity/central setting of questions, about which of the following kinds of topics does your evaluation system ask?
> self-assessment of learning outcomes
> use of specific pedagogical techniques
> summative evaluation of teacher/course quality
> What are the response rates from students?
> Do you provide any of the course/instructor evaluation data in a public (or semi-public) form that students can see?
> Do you have any open response questions for which the responses are made available to students? (E.g. Harvard’s Q system has a question that asks students “Would you recommend this course to peers?” from which the responses are available to students when they next register for courses.)
