Hey all,

I have been compiling sakai-trunk-all with Sun JDK 7 and OpenJDK 7 fine for
a while now.
There were some changes I had to make which I haven't shared back yet, but
nothing out of the ordinary.

If you check out 2.9.x (not 2.9.x-all) you should be able to build
completely with JDK 7 and not have any issues.
I have also done some minimal testing with most tools and everything seems
to be fine. Of course more rigorous testing is in order which I have heard
of a nightly qa server with OpenJDK 7 being suggested.

Also I have not had any issues specific to OpenJDK. According to Mark
Reinholdt, Chief Java Architect at Oracle, he says OpenJDK is 99.8% the
same source code as the Oracle released version. The main differences are
related to audio codec and some SVGA stuff that they couldn't open source.

I believe Oracle feels that there is no reason to have a separate package
other than the OpenJDK for linux systems, which is why they are
discontinuing producing an Oracle package for those systems.

All in all I feel like we are moving towards using JDK 7 and Tomcat 7 in
general.
