FYI, I've created JIRA SAM-2192 for tracking this.

To me this is a pretty big blocker especially for schools with very large Samigo tables.  We are going to have to find a work around quickly as we just upgraded to the latest 2.9.x.  I'm worried that if we get enough of these queries at the same time it can take down MySQL.

So is changing the sub-select to a join a possibility?  If not, doing the sub-query first, getting the result in the app code, and then using the result in the second query should dramatically improve results.
