Ok, so I've spent a lot more time one this than I hoped, but I tracked down
the issue and fixed it.

It actually affects trunk, but only MySQL (not Oracle for some reason)

I've explained the issue and the patch in the Jira.

This should be patched in trunk and 2.9.x.  Let me know if you want me to
commit the code or not.
