I'm not sure, but I believe it's related to mime types.  Maybe someone who
understands web audio better can chime in.

The advantage is that you don't need a plugin!  Windows OOTB isn't going to
have a Quicktime player without downloading and installing.  Being able to
use native browser components is a huge step forward.
